My Story
Chapter 1!
Ok here goes...
Way way back in 1994, I was 22 years old & a shy little thing, I had just had a promotion at work which meant I was dealing with alot more people than I was used to & more responsibility, also around this time I was a witness to my friend being attacked by her boyfriend,& had to testify against him in court, looking back now I believe these 2 things were the trigger to my panic attacks, but at the time I had no clue at all, to me it just started out of the blue one evening sat at home watching TV with my family. ( I was still living at home at this time)
Obviously I am sure you all know what a panic attack feels like so wont bore you with that, my mum called an out of hours doctor, what added to my fear was that dear old mum who has the answer for everything could not help me, anyway doc came out, said "its a panic attack" gave me a pill which I guess now was a benzo of some kind & went on his way. I calmed down, went to bed, woke up feeling fine & thought "well thank god thats gone" but as you all know, it was the beginning of what I thoght was the end for me!
Over the next 2 years, I continued to have panic attacks, out of the blue, anytime anywhere! I never believed that doctors original diagnosis & as I am sure you will be familiar with, I was convinced I was dying!
At first I would have a panic attack, then it would pass & I would feel normal again, but as the months went on & it got more frequent, I got worse & worse until my days ( & nights)were one long panic attack, remember there was no internet back then,if there had been & I had access to the information we have today I believe I would have had half a chance of nipping this thing in the bud & I would not be where I am now but hey ho!
Anyway things got so bad that eventually I went to my doctor, I had left is so long because I was scared there would be nothing he could do for me which would mean killing myself, he was a last resort & he saw my desperation...
He prescribed me Seroxat & told me to come back in a fortnight...
Well you wanted the long version! To be continued.....!

Hi Heather, I was also just getting started on IAWP but had been reading for a while. Like you, my first panic attack hit me when I was in my 20's, (while grocery shopping), I thought I was dying or being transported into another dimension.
Looking forward to the next part of your story.
