Hi I hope people don't mind me joining this site. I am so grateful that we have somewhere else to go. I am sure that we can recreate the spirit there was on IAWP...we all have so much in common!
I had read on the IAWP the benefits of taking a low dose of melatonin to aid sleep. What are peoples experiences of this? I cannot buy this over the counter here in the U.K. it's only available on prescription and I don't think my doctor would prescribe it. I could buy it over the internet but after researching this there seems to be an overall feeling that different brands contain ingredients that don't appear on the labels (a worry as we all have to be careful about what we are putting into our bodies during w/d).
I need to know if it would be worth buying it over the internet and if so from where and which brand.
There are natural ways to increase melatonin...one is eating cherries apparently...I have just realised we have a big cherry tree on the road behind our house...how did I not notice that before now??? I saw the fruits on the floor behind our house and realised they were cherries. Then my husband saw some children climbing the tree yesterday after the fruits...I have to say they taste great but if they induce sleep perhaps cherry picking at 07:30 this morning with my 6 year old wasnot such a great idea!
I need to look into this more....

Hello Hermi; I've been taking Melatonin for sleep and it seems to work fine. I am 1 year off and it is hard to say if the improvement I've had in sleep is because supplements or time. But I think you should give it a try. I take 0.50mg sublingual from GNC about 1-2hrs before I want to sleep. How long have you been off?

Yes I have heard a few people say they have had no problems with it. A few questions though... How long is it safe to take for? I have read in various places that its not recommended for more than 2 months...I wonder if this means with continuous use? Maybe if you only take it a couple of nights a week it may be safe to take for longer? Also, like I already mentioned, I cannot buy it over the counter here in the U.K. so I will have to buy it over the internet. Does anyone have any recommendations on the brand/site I can buy from? Thanks...sorry to ask so many questions

I took it for 2 years. That's probably too long but I would discontinue it every now and again and it had no effect on me. I forget which brand I had, but different brands have different tastes to them.

Hermi, you can order Melatonin 1mg from Amazon. You can take it every night; it's a natural product. Don't worry.

I take melatonin during my first benzo wd. My psquiatra scold me when I said I was taking melatonin. I did not have any symptoms of WD or anything like that, but I read that some people can not take during wd. Actually the mission of melatonin is to regulate the cycles of dreams ( 3 o 4 few weeks) "People use melatonin to adjust the body’s internal clock. It is used for jet lag, for adjusting sleep-wake cycles in people whose daily work schedule changes (shift-work disorder), and for helping blind people establish a day and night cycle. Melatonin is also used for the inability to fall asleep (insomnia); delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS); insomnia associated with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); insomnia due to certain high blood pressure medications called beta-blockers; and sleep problems in children with developmental disorders including autism, cerebral palsy, and mental retardation. It is also used as a sleep aid after discontinuing the use of benzodiazepine drugs and to reduce the side effects of stopping smoking. Some people use melatonin for Alzheimer’s disease, ringing in the ears, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia, migraine and other headaches, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bone loss (osteoporosis), a movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia (TD), epilepsy, as an anti-aging agent, for menopause, and for birth control." Ah thanks for that everyone. I have had a look at some more information. The only thing I am wondering now is whether to get it in slow release form or not?

That is good you got some Melatonin to help your sleep. Start with 0.50mg and see how you react. Don't expect any miracles. Good luck. BTW, how much sleep are you getting right now?

It varies on a good night about 6 hours, fairly unbroken. On a bad night 2 hours unbroken...maybe 3-4 in total. Not brill..I never was very good before med or w/d on less than 7-8 hours. I'm not getting that and I am exhausted! I look tired, I feel tired. I would be happy with 6 EVERY night, I could cope with that but I suppose I have to make do!
